It looks like the Journal News has come to their senses.
According to The Daily Cartoonist, the Westchester newspaper has reversed their initial decision and will not eliminate the staff cartoonist position that Pulitzer-Prize winner Matt Davies has filled for nearly 17 years.
Davies’ staff cartoonist position had previously been selected as one of 50 newsroom jobs to be eliminated at the Gannett-owned newspaper.
“My paper looked down the cold and terrible barrel of not having an editorial cartoonist on staff and just couldn’t do it,” Davies told Alan Gardner.
“The clear message is that no matter how small a newspaper payroll needs to be in order for a paper to turn a profit, a decent staff cartoonist who connects with the audience is a smart part of that profit strategy.
