Finally, Irwin Hasen’s colorful life has found a publisher.
Vanguard Publishing has announced they will release Loverboy, a new graphic novel by the Dondi co-creator, in December. It will be released as both a 128-page trade paperback and hardcover.
While attended the Joe Kubert School (where Hasen, 91, still teaches), I had the opportunity to see some of the pages of the book, and I remember at the time being impressed with its honesty and humor. It mixes fact and fiction, and starts of as romantic escapades of a man-about-town only to segue into an autobiography of Hasen’s life.
Want a taste of the types of stories make their way into the book? Here’s a video I made while a student at the Kubert School, of Hasen telling the class the story of how he lost his virginity.
I apologize for the camerawork (it stabilizes in the first minute or so), but lines like “every whorehouse has a bathroom…” and “Hy Eisman is a bit of a prude” make up for it.
