Definition: sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one’s own.
Progressive Left definition: a fair, objective and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions and practices fall lock-step with Progressive ideology. Otherwise, rogues are sent to the gulag.
Psychologists at the University of Virginia and Harvard University created a test (Project Implicit) to measure unconscious bias that may be hidden deep within the human psyche in order to unearth stereotypical, discriminatory or prejudicial behaviors. Ongoing test results reveal something it shouldn’t have taken academic elitists seven years to unearth: humans are prejudice and intolerant. Research money and time may have been better spent investigating what constitutes the Progressive Left’s DNA that inhibits them from seeing reality when it comes to the issue of tolerance.
Progressive Democrats’ seemingly noble theme of “being all things to all people” sounds virtuous echoing the halls of academia and appears upright when you see them waving their protest signs on the streets of San Francisco – but then you witness jaw dropping antics like that of Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walking off their own talk show, The View, simply because they disagreed with their invited guest’s (Bill O’Reilly) view. And you realize what Progressives really want has nothing to do with free speech, hale and hearty conversation – or tolerance.
The iniquitous firing of Juan Williams by the taxpayer funded and left leaning National Public Radio, ironically notorious for their All Things Considered show, is case-in-point and serves to bolster the question of what the heck do Progressives want – really? They had it all in Williams – a smart and honest left leaning political broker. He could have been their poster child – except he committed the Progressive’s apparently unpardonable sin. Williams had the audacity to voice his personal opinion.
It would be easier to buy NPR’s claim that Williams compromised his credibility as an objective analyst or the politically correct mumbo jumbo had fellow NPR peer Nina Totenberg also been canned for her strong and offensive opinions suggesting that the absence of Christians would make the world a better place and her infamous statement wishing the late Jesse Helms (or his grandchildren) would acquire the aids virus.
In response to his dismissal, Williams responded with an op-ed piece where he said “”¦they [NPR] have used an honest statement of feeling as the basis for a charge of bigotry to create a basis for firing me”¦.This is an outrageous violation of journalistic standards and ethics by management that has no use for a diversity of opinion, ideas or a diversity of staff (I was the only black male on the air). This is evidence of one-party rule and one sided thinking at NPR that leads to enforced ideology, speech and writing.”
If anything good could come out of Williams firing, it would be that everyday Americans had the opportunity to see up close and personal (and just before mid-term elections) that Progressive Left ideology has nothing to do with tolerance. Tolerance doesn’t coalesce from dogmatism, illiberalism and bigotry; rather it comes from the recognition of the wide diversity of thought around the country and giving those ideas a seat at the table.
