President Obama was swept in to office on promises of hope, change, and a new way of doing business in Washington. That new way of doing business is proving to be anything but. Rather than following through on pledges of reform and transparency the Obama Administration is going to great lengths to reward special interests, ingratiate itself to union bosses, all while evading the transparency that Obama had deemed so essential. The presidency is at its core a commitment to the American people – it is a promise to faithfully execute the laws of the United States, to do what is best for the nation, not what is best for one’s political supporters. This is a promise that the Obama Administration has tragically broken.
Want to Talk in Private? A Coffee Shop is Far More Discreet than the White House
The Obama administration boasts of its “unprecedented” transparency achieved by placing select records of White House visitor logs on its website. The visitor logs allegedly allow you to see who has got the ear of the President and his staff. You can view how often labor union bosses, lobbyists, and special interest group representatives stop by the White House to influence policy.
It sounds like a nice way to hold the administration accountable – until you learn how they circumvent this transparency measure. First, only visitors to the West Wing are logged. In other words, if you don’t meet with a lobbyist in a certain office, you won’t be on the official record. So where do Obama’s advisors choose to meet with lobbyists? There are many offices in the White House complex that are not logged and made publically available – one commonly used “off the grid” space is the White House Conference Center.
But many staffers have found meeting lobbyists on White House grounds may send the wrong message, so they choose instead to meet in secret at neighboring restaurants such as Caribou Coffee. Perhaps the anonymity of a public place helps Obama staffers reconcile their meetings with lobbyists and special interests with President Obama’s public denunciation of them.
These efforts to meet with special interests in secret are well documented, but they may just be the tip of the iceberg. It has been revealed that Chinese hackers have been attempting to infiltrate the personal email accounts of senior government officials. If Obama’s staff is following the law, they would only be engaging in official communication through White House email addresses. However, if they are using their personal email accounts to conduct official business in secret, efforts to hack their personal email accounts may pose a security concern. Given the administration track record, it’s more likely than not that Obama’s staff is evading record keeping requirements in an effort to hide their activities from the public — in doing so they’re creating a risk to our national security.
Obamacare is too Expensive? Let’s Give You a Waiver
The Obama Administration and its legislative champion, Nancy Pelosi, rammed Obamacare through the legislative process. Pelosi proclaimed “we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what’s in it.” The plan was sold to the American people with lies including Obama’s pledge that “if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.”
Now that we see some Obamacare provisions in effect, they are stifling businesses across our nation. The onerous requirements of Obamacare are proving unworkable for companies — they are faced with laying off employees, dropping health insurance all together, or shuttering their doors, based on the new costs thrust upon them by President Obama.
Many employers had offered lower income workers “mini-med” plans. They had high deductibles and low annual spending caps. These plans allowed millions of Americans access to health care they otherwise would not receive. Obamacare phases out the spending caps. This raises the cost of providing health care, and many employers can’t afford these “reforms.”
It is hurting businesses of every size across the nation; but if you’re a friend of President Obama or Nancy Pelosi there’s no need to worry. The Obama administration has been doling out waivers from this requirement. Nearly 1,400 waivers have been granted. The United Federation of Teachers, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, and SEIU all got one. But it’s not just Obama’s union supporters that have been granted waivers — in April, an additional 38 businesses in Nancy Pelosi’s Congressional District were also granted reprieves from this expensive requirement.
How Dare You Create Non-Union Jobs
Our economy is struggling. Unemployment remains high at 9.1 percent. One would think the Obama Administration would embrace any attempt to create jobs and growth in our economy. For example, Boeing planned to open a facility in South Carolina this summer to produce 787 Dreamliner airplanes. This plant would have brought hundreds of jobs to South Carolina. Most people would consider this to be good news.
Rather than applauding this effort to create jobs, members of the Obama Administration are fighting against it. The National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”) is taking efforts to stop Boeing from creating these high-paying, non-union jobs. A private corporation should be allowed to make a business decision to create a plant where it sees fit. The federal government should not be dictating how to run a private corporation. Boeing was well within its rights to invest in a new factory in a right-to-work state like South Carolina.
Organized labor has a strong supporter on the NLRB, Obama gave SEIU lawyer Craig Becker a recess appointment to the board. With Becker on board, it’s no surprise that the NLRB has filed a complaint against Boeing for choosing to create jobs in a right-to-work state like South Carolina rather than the more union friendly state of Washington.
