I think laying off teachers is one of the most short-sighted and stupid things to do to a community. Every municipal bureaucracy is loaded with lazy political appointees, politically connected loafers and cousins of the of rich donors whose absence would not effect the town one iota if they were canned. Sure, get rid of bad teachers, but wholesale layoffs are stupid and reflect the intelligence of the town and city idiots making that decision.
I had some great teachers who advanced my young life as a budding artist. Mrs. Gumper, Mrs. Lebamoff, and Mrs. Fleck come to mind. I’ve had great teachers in other subjects, too. I’ve had teachers of business, geology, and history who opened my mind. My sixth grade teacher, Mr. Brumbaugh, inspired my first comic strip when he decided the class would publish a weekly newspaper.
I had some losers, too, but I can remember only three during twelve years of public school. After high school, the teachers I had at the American Academy of Art were instrumental in giving me the confidence to grow as an artist and stretch out as a professional. No sir, laying off teachers is stupid, but we all know the quality of our municipal leaders. They probably had good teachers. They were just bad students.
