This country is in big trouble. Harry Reid’s in charge and he couldn’t even get the Duck Stamp Agreement passed. It’s an agreement among conservationists and hunters for hunters themselves to pay more money for conservation. No new taxes. A self-imposed increase in fees from $15 to $25. Imagine your party is so successful in winning a presidential election, yet so incompetent that they can’t pass one single budget in four years, even when their party controlled both the Senate and the House.
You’ve just imagined the current Democratic Party.
President Obama and the NRA agreed it would be nice to raise over $132 million dollars for wetland preservation. Ducks Unlimited members agreed to support paying an additional $10 for the stamp you put on your hunting license to prove you’re legally registered to do a little 12-gauge grocery shopping. All they had to do was a procedural vote. But Harry Reid got everyone so riled up the day before with his filibuster bluster that the partisan political poison spilled into the next day, including the Duck Stamp vote.
Democrats didn’t show up to vote, pouting, I suspect, and Republicans were cranky. As reported by David Rogers at Politico.com, “The whole incident speaks volumes about the level of partisan dysfunction in the Senate…” Meanwhile, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn) has worked for a year on a solid plan for solving our budget problems with a few Democrats like Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del) who actually want a solution. Not Reid. His behavior backs up his verbal support of democrats like Patty Murray (D-Wash), who say they have no problem increasing middle class taxes, cutting jobs and cutting unemployment benefits if it helps them pass their political agenda.
Reid has an even bigger objective than merely squeezing the middle class for political gain: Change Senate filibuster rules so he can push through even more of his agenda without that annoying constitutional protection he used to care about so much. Right now it takes 60 votes to end filibustering debate in the Senate. Democrats have 55 seats. They want to change the rules so they can end filibusters with only 51 votes. This seems oh-so-reasonable to Democrats who complain Republicans “have blocked everything our President wanted to do.”
It’s no surprise quotes like these from Harry Hypocrite Reid himself regarding the filibuster are circulating the country, including this column:
“For more than 200 years, the rules of the Senate have protected the American people, and rightfully so. The need to muster 60 votes in order to terminate Senate debate naturally frustrates the majority and oftentimes the minority. I am sure it will frustrate me when I assume the office of majority leader in a few weeks. But I recognize this requirement is a tool that serves the long-term interest of the Senate and the American people and our country.” (Sen. Reid, Congressional Record, S.11591, 12/8/06)
“(The filibuster) is a unique privilege that serves to aid small states from being trampled by the desires of larger states. Indeed, I view the use of the filibuster as a shield, rather than a sword. Invoked to protect rights, not to suppress them.” (Sen. Reid, Congressional Record, S.434, 1/5/95)
And then there’s President Obama, who now supports Harry Reid’s efforts to send the traditions and rules of this institution he so loves into the trashcan:
“The American people want less partisanship in this town, but everyone in this Chamber knows that if the majority chooses to end the filibuster, if they choose to change the rules and put an end to democratic debate, then the fighting, the bitterness, and the gridlock will only get worse.” (Sen. Obama, Congressional Record, S.3512, 4/13/05)
Are the Democrats hypocrites who only love the constitution when it serves their purpose? Maybe we need a new Duck Stamp pasted on Reid’s forehead that reads, “If I look like a self-serving hypocrite, walk a self-serving hypocrite and talk like a self-serving hypocrite, I’m Harry Reid.”
