With less than three weeks until America goes over the fiscal cliff, it’s important that all Americans understand how we got into this position in the first place. President Obama’s utter lack of leadership over the past four years has made our financial situation worse. Along with Democrats in Congress, President Obama refused to tackle the tough issues that needed to be addressed, and kicked the can down the road until after the 2012 general election. Why? Obama chose the safer political route and put his own reelection ahead of the American economy and its fiscal well-being.
Protected by his friends in the liberal mainstream media, President Obama has not been held accountable for this lack of leadership. There have been no 60 Minutes special investigations into how and why America’s fiscal footing is crumbling right before our very eyes. Americans do not understand that by going over the fiscal cliff, taxes will go up on everybody, which will hurt an already sputtering economy. Perhaps teaching that lesson would be the best of a bad reality.
President Obama, buoyed by the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, believes in Big Government liberal policies. So it should not be a shock that the federal workforce has ballooned to 2.2 million workers – reaching levels not seen since the Clinton Administration. The federal government has become a bloated mess that only consumes taxpayer money.
If we do go over the fiscal cliff, the payroll tax cut expires, the Bush tax cuts expire, and estate taxes will revert back to pre-Bush tax cut levels. Obviously, all of these tax hikes will devastate an already fragile economy. However, all President Obama and Democrats in Congress see is the opportunity for more tax revenue for their ever-expanding federal government, not real cuts or reforms of entitlement programs.
One of the founding principles of America is limited government; it is what makes America a unique and exceptional nation. These principles are also the bedrock of modern-day conservatism. It is imperative that Republicans in Congress – led by Speaker John Boehner – stand firm for these beliefs and do not raise taxes on their fellow Americans. America has a spending problem, NOT a revenue problem. Any solutions that will actually work in tamping down our debt must involve comprehensive entitlement reform.
Citizens United has launched a “Say No To Obama Tax Hikes” petition drive that affirms the five principles below for lower taxes and limited government:
1. The federal government taxes too much and spends too much.
2. Tax increases harm economic growth and job creation.
3. Reform entitlement programs.
4. Reform and simplify our tax code.
5. Cut all federal spending to balance the budget and reduce the debt.
America is worth fighting for and the decisions that will be made in the next three weeks will have far reaching consequences on future generations. Sign the petition and let your voice be heard in Washington. We know how the Democrats will vote, that is why it is so important for Congressional Republicans to stand firm on their core principles and not capitulate to President Obama.
