Englehart’s View by Bob Englehart
It’s obvious to me that we as a country need to have same sex marriage recognized and legalized in all 50 states. It doesn’t make sense any other way. We tried different rules for different states with slavery and that didn’t work out so well.
Marriage is marriage and it’s not about procreation or same or different sexes. Marriage is about whatever the two people getting married want it to be.
I’ve heard all the arguments against it and they’re all based on fear, prejudice, hatred, or a very narrow certainty about what some religion says God wants us to do. I say if two people love each other, want to try like hell to spend the rest of their lives together and want all the benefits society gives people like that, then let them get married. We have no right to stop them.
Gay marriage is practical and logical. Society is strengthened when people pair up in a legally established and committed way. Winston Churchill said, “Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing after they have exhausted all other possibilities.”
The right thing the USA will do eventually is standardize gay marriage across the country. I love it when people, i.e. society, race far ahead of our old creaky institutions that are then left with the choice to evolve or die. That’s the kind of choice conservatives like, isn’t it?
