Unsurprisingly, President Obama has nominated a radical to head the Department of Labor. Thomas Perez who is currently the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, is the wrong person for this cabinet position. You just have to look at his below board performance at the Department of Justice to see that he would bring the Department of Labor even more to the Left.
As reported in the Wall Street Journal, Perez is in hot water for conducting official business using his private Verizon email address in his current position as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. When asked by congressional investigators about the use of his email to work with lawyers of St. Paul, Minnesota to stop a Supreme Court case which threatened to nullify a questionable legal enforcement mechanism for housing discrimination, Perez responded on March 22: “I don’t have any recollection of having communicated via personal email on this matter.” But as it turns out, he used that personal address almost 1,200 times! Not only is this a clear violation of the Federal Records Act, it is one of America’s chief law enforcement officials apparently lying under oath and violating the trust of the American people.
Perez, through his work with the ACORN-associated Casa de Maryland, worked to assist illegal immigrants in breaking the law by setting up day labor camps. This group encouraged illegal immigrants to avoid answering questions to immigration agents or police officers, favored driver licenses for illegals, and even discouraged police departments from enforcing federal fugitive warrants. Someone who does not respect America’s laws is the last person we need serving as Labor Secretary.
Thomas Perez has also waged war against people of faith and the pro-life movement. For example, he brought a case against Mary Susan Pine in Florida Federal Court. Pine is a woman who for more than two decades engaged in friendly sidewalk counseling for women seeking abortions in West Palm Beach. While engaging in this ministry, Ms. Pine was notified by police that she had violated city and state traffic laws on one particular day, then the Justice Department brought charges under Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE). However, because FACE allows an exemption for peaceful demonstration, it was immediately tossed out of court and Perez’s division was charged court and attorney fees.
In addition, he joined in the Federal case that tried to tell Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church in Michigan who they can hire for religious instruction, which turned into a landmark Supreme Court decision involving religious liberty. It was a case involving a teacher who left on a medical disability, but wanted her job back. When the school informed her that a new teacher was hired, she wanted to sue based on discrimination, but the court tossed the case out 9-0, ruling that churches are exempt from discrimination laws. That means not only did the conservative Justices dismiss his arguments, but so did the liberal wing of the Supreme Court. His legal arguments were too radical and outlandish even for Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The nomination of Thomas Perez to be Labor Secretary will be voted in the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee later this week. Moderate Democrat Senators like North Carolina’s Kay Hagan, Pennsylvania’s Robert Casey and Colarado’s Michael Bennet should be held accountable for their committee vote.
Thomas Perez’s track record at the Department of Justice shows that he is unfit for this cabinet post.
