Englehart’s View by Bob Englehart
The extremism of the Republicans undermines everything they try to do, from their criticism of issues from the ridiculous to the sublime and to their desire to be taken seriously by the “mainstream” press. Because the moderates can’t, or won’t, distance the party from all the nuts, religious extremists and the talk show haters, their big tent is a freak show.
Thank God for the mainstream press, of which I am a proud member. I know we’re doing the right thing because the extremes on both ends of the political spectrum hate us. The right says we’re ignoring them and the left says we’ve sold out. If wanting a newspaper job that will support a family of four is selling out, where do I sign. If ignoring the rants of the right-wing airwave maniacs while searching for the truth is wrong, then like the song says, I don’t want to be right.
In the information age, misinformation thrives. It only has to be sold with authority and gravitas. Hard facts eventually emerge and moderate people will respond accordingly. The right wing will believe anything negative about anyone who’s not like them. The left wing lives in a dream of possibilities. The right wing lives in a nightmare of terror. The middle watches, listens, reads and runs this great country.
