Englehart’s View by Bob Englehart
The only time I wear a watch is when I’m on vacation so I know when it’s over. A vacation from a job you hate is a godsend, but it’s different when you like your work. You leave the office looking over your shoulder thinking about what you want to do when you get back. Sometimes you take your work with you. Your family and friends encourage you to let it go for awhile, it’ll be there on your return, but you can’t quite put it out of your mind. You keep coming up with good ideas.
When I’m on vacation, I have this feeling that some event will happen that cries out for a cartoon and that I’ll have to let it go, ignore it if I’m to stay true to the idea of a vacation. That feeling started back in the last century when President Richard Nixon resigned as I was touring the wilds of Canada.
Now, with modern communication tools, technically I could do something about it but back then, all I could do is feel sad for my country.
Nothing of that magnitude has happened since, but that’s not to say I don’t think about it when I’m sloshing around a swimming pool up in the Adirondack Mountains. I say all this because this is the week I usually take my vacation, but this year I’m not going until October. By then, I’ll be more than ready.
It’s good to take a break now and then, even when you like what you’re doing.Time Off For Bad Behavior,
