I was a resident cartoonist with West Africa magazine, a London based Pan African magazine weekly when Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years of incarceration by the then South Africa apartheid regime. So my first cartoon on Madiba was in the magazine.
I also remember clearly the first image of how he likely looked then, which came to us then, before his release. It was a black and white illustration of him and was widely circulated in the World’s press.
I have had my fair share of drawing Mandela nothing as prolific as Zapiro, a good friend and South Africa cartoonist who has drawn cartoons of Mandela more than any other cartoonist on the surface of this planet. Zapiro also gave me an insight of his meetings with Mandela, when we first met in Italy and then later again in Cameroon, showing his treasured pictures taken with Mandela and his (Zapiro’s) family. Many of us did not meet him, but Mandela gave us joy drawing him.
No one has come close.
