We are in the middle of a humanitarian crisis in the United States. There are thousands of illegal immigrant children who have crossed our southern border and are inside of these United States. Now the Obama Administration and this nation are faced with finding a solution and a place for these unaccompanied minors.
Democrat Representative Henry Cueller of Texas said earlier this week that Obama risks having a “Katrina moment” if he continues to ignore this situation by not only not visiting the border, but addressing the nation about this issue and attempts to find a solution to this problem. Not only that, but Oklahoma Republican Representative Jim Bridenstine was denied entry recently by the Health and Human Services Department into a facility that was temporarily housing over 1,000 illegal immigrant minors in Oklahoma. After he was denied access, he drove to another holding center where he was again stopped from gaining entry. This is outrageous behavior for the federal government to bar a member of the House Armed Services Committee from this military base.
In January of 2013, then-White House Press Secretary Jay Carney echoed the words of President Obama declaring “our borders now are more secure than they have ever been in history.” The events of these past weeks and months clearly prove the Obama White House was once again lying. As a nation, we have been trying to have a conversation about our illegal immigration crisis but the time for talk is over. It’s time to act.
Clearly our borders aren’t secure. Clearly we aren’t enforcing our borders as well as we need to be. Clearly we need to fix this failing policy. The same Administration that promised to be the most transparent in history six years ago has continued to lie and obfuscate when it comes to our national illegal immigration crisis. Of all people to be denied entry to these temporary facilities, why are we turning away members of the House of Representatives?
The Obama Administration needs to drop the act and tell the American people the truth rather than worrying about their political capital and clout in Washington D.C. Whether or not you live in a border state, or a state where these illegal unaccompanied minors are being brought to a temporary facility, this issue touches all Americans.
Additionally, the media has been caught asleep at the wheel on this issue. Whether it’s their own personal politics on illegal immigration or their loyalty to this President who prevents them from reporting the truth, the media has been completely neglectful when it comes to reporting the stories about these unaccompanied minors. Under any other Administration there would be reporters inside taking pictures, or calling out the President for restricting access. They would be calling it a humanitarian crisis and demanding action immediately. Instead, there has been mostly silence from the mainstream media and this is completely unacceptable.
It boils down to this: we are now responsible for the negative effects that are a direct result of the inaction of the Obama Administration. There must be transparency going forward about who these minors are, where they are going, how the Administration plans to prevent more from crossing the border and what the overall plan is for our national illegal immigration crisis.
It’s time for transparency and answers, and it’s time we actually secure our border. We can’t wait around for another crisis like this to take place.
