Doug Marlette, the Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist, award winning author and playwright, died on July 10th in a traffic accident. We have put together a selection of cartoons that give a taste of Doug's rich career as an editorial cartoonist.

Doug drew political cartoons for his student newspaper at Florida State University. He went on to work at the Charlotte Observer, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Newsday, The Tallahassee Democrat and The Tulsa World. He also wrote and drew the nationally syndicated comic strip Kudzu, which he started in 1981.

Doug won every major award for editorial cartooning, including the 1988 Pulitzer Price for Editorial Cartooning for cartoons focusing the PTL scandal involving TV Evangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, which was a local story for him. Doug loved to draw cartoons about race, civil rights and religion. He took a special joy in bursting the inflated egos of television evangelists. Doug seemed to enjoy controversy and was an eloquent spokesman for our profession. He was a great influence on many cartoonists working today.

When the Space Shuttle exploded in January, 1986, Doug drew this crying eagle which is probably his most famous cartoon.

Doug earned fame as an editorial cartoonist for his cartoons lampooning television evangelists, Jim and Tammy Bakker.
