At a time when the news is generally slow, big events seemed to fly in faster than the winds of Hurricane Irene. Everything from the resignation of Apple guru Steve Jobs, to a rare earthquake striking the East Coast. Oh, and there’s the whole Libya thing too.

I’m an Apple guy. Always have been, always will be. I had one of the first Macs way back in the 1980s when the screen was black and the type was yellow. Today I work at home on an eMac OS X, admittedly the Underwood typewriter of computers, but I love it. Its old-fashioned cathode ray tube gives me perfect color. At the Courant, I also use a Mac OS X, but it has a big, flat-screen display.

I don’t have stock in Apple (unless it’s through the mutual funds I own), and I wish Steve Jobs good health, but I don’t think at this point it matters much who is at the helm. Jobs did one of those things few people do in their lifetimes. He created something bigger than himself. Apple will go on. The company will thrive, creative leaders will develop new products, and the industry will continue to expand. Apple’s future as a leader in the digital universe is secure. Hey, Apple learned from the best.
