It’s been a tough couple of days for Missouri Rep. Todd Akin, who is in the middle of a U.S. Senate run to outst Democrat Claire McCaskill (don’t miss our collection of Todd Akin cartoons). On Sunday, Akin appeared in an interview on a St. Louis TV station, and when asked if he would support abortions for women who have been raped, he awkwardly responded, ”It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
He’s spend the past two days in damage control after losing the financial backing of both the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the American Crossroads Super PAC, run by Karl Rove. Akin’s campaign even put together an ad overnight where he apologizes for his “legitimate rape” comment and concedes that “rape can lead to pregnancy.”
Glad we got that out of the way, although you’d think someone who serves on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology would have already known that.
Here’s the ad. Think voters in Missouri will forgive him?
