Our long national nightmare might be over! Despite all those long lines of conservatives seemingly in support of their homophobic policies, it appears Chick-fil-A has buckled under public pressure and reversed course, at least as far as gay rights are concerned.
Advocacy group Civil Rights Agenda (CRA), the largest civil rights advocacy organization in Illinois, has released a statement confirming an earlier report on Chicago Phoenix that Chick-fil-A will no longer give donations to anti-gay organizations.
CRA claims the pledge if from a letter Chick-fil-A sent to Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno, who publicly opposed the expansion of Chick-fil-A stores into the city.
The letter promises that WinShape, Chick-fil-A’s non-profit charity, “is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.”
Earlier today, Tony Merevick over at Chicago Phoenix broke the news that Chick-fil-A had agreed to stop making donations to anti-gay organizations. Chick-fil-A also issued a company-wide internal mandate calling for the equal treatment of all employes and customers, writing that it’s time to “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender.”
I wonder what this means for all the members of Congress and media figures who took photos of themselves chowing down a deep fried chicken sandwich. Now that Chick-fil-A has switched course, it seems to me that they are now on the hook for pandering to and supporting bigotry.
