Two prime examples of how American influence has deteriorated under President Obama include what we have seen over the last few weeks in the Middle East and the all-out war between Israel and Hamas.  Our foreign policy is in shambles because President Obama would rather let others take the lead when it is American leadership that is essential to finding solutions to an ever more dangerous world.  The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, looks like it has lost faith in the Obama Administration, just like a majority of Americans have.  Can you blame them?

Let’s just briefly look at what President Obama and both his Secretaries of State (Hillary Clinton and John Kerry) have achieved in regards to the damage done to our relationship with one of our most important allies in the Middle East - Israel.  Three years ago, President Obama suggested that Israel should go back to its 1967 borders.  A statement which brought a quick rebuke from Netanyahu saying Obama’s statement was “indefensible.”  A member of the Israeli Knesset even said, “Israel will not pay [Obama's] private tuition as he tries to understand the essence of the conflict.”

That brings us to where we are today. Israel is under constant threat from Hamas due to their ability to launch rockets indiscriminately into Israel.  These rockets can hit a majority of the citizenry in Israel and when a rocket is launched, Israelis only have seconds to seek shelter.  Thanks to the much vaunted “Iron Dome” these rockets are often intercepted before they are able to do physical harm…but some get by.  The psychological harm on the people of Israel is unknown.  Could you imagine being under constant threat from rocket fire?  Would Americans sit idly by if a foreign terrorist organization kept on firing rockets into the country?  The answer to both questions is a resounding NO.

One of the sole reasons of having a functional government is to protect its citizens.  Clearly the rocket fire on Israel is a direct threat to the sovereignty of Israel.  On top of launching rocket fire, Hamas has constructed an intricate tunnel system in which to threaten Israel.  These tunnels can be used to store rockets as well as to conduct deadly operations inside Israel.  Just this week, Hamas used one of these tunnels to attack inside Israel.  Hamas has been on the attack and Israel needs to and must defend itself.

It is disturbing to see that both President Obama and the U.N. Security Council have been putting “pressure” on the Israeli government to reach a ceasefire.  Israeli operations within Gaza have been effective and are continuing because the threat by Hamas has not subsided.  Hamas is a terrorist organization bent on the destruction of Israel. President Obama must give his full support to Israel.  They are defending their sovereign state from a terrorist enemy.  We would do the same.
