The attention of the world has suddenly been turned to Haiti, one of the Western Hemisphere's poorest nations. A major earthquake struck the southern part of the country yesterday, the strongest to hit the region in more than two centuries, leaving the country in shambles.
Events like this pose an interesting challenge to editorial cartoonists, who generally use their pens to lampoon and point out the absurdities of politics and current events. But cartoonists are also adept at summing up an event in a single, powerful image that can be more influential and moving than any amount of written words could hope to be.
