The Golden Age of Comic Books: 1938-1950

Atlanta is home to this newly opened exhibit of comic art and memorabilia from the formative period of comic books. Curated by the legendary Jerry Robinson, the exhibit is at the Breman Jewish Center in midtown Atlanta through August 2005. Hogan's Alley visited the exhibit on the day it opened (of course), and we've prepared this photo album to whet your appetite. Bear in mind that these photos were taken in relatively low light levels, so the actual original art is much more vibrant than it appears here. (We didn't use flash photography because the artwork is behind glass.) As we walked through the exhibit--one of the most beautifully designed we've ever seen--we marveled at the artifacts. We've seen the published version of many of these pieces, but we never thought we'd have the opportunity to see the Bristol board over which the artists labored. We encourage anyone visiting Atlanta to stop by the Breman Center. In the meantime, enjoy this sampler of what the exhibit contains! Just click on an image to see an enlargement.
