Hogan's Alley #17

This page contains doorways to the material that we were unable to fit into the print edition of Hogan's Alley #17 and material that we were unable to present in color. While we think you'll enjoy the following material on its own merits, we think you'll find it an even more rewarding experience if you read the related stories in Hogan's Alley #17. To purchase Hogan's Alley #17, please visit our ordering page, where you can also purchase back issues.

Ed Black's look at the life and career of the ever-colorful Jimmy Hatlo likely left you hungry for more, so here we're happy to present nearly 100 of his "They'll Do It Every Time" daily panels from the early 1940s, when Hatlo reigned as one of America's most popular cartoonists! These cartoons were not included in the printed feature.

It's always tough to follow in the footsteps of a legend, but Dwight Parks did a fine job of it, as readers of Ger Appeldoorn's feature in Hogan's Alley #17 know. Parks was tapped to succeed Jack Cole on "Betsy and Me" after the legendary cartoonist's suicide. Here, we present examples of Parks' work on "Betsy" as well as his own strip.

Rob Stolzer's article on forgotten cartoonist Gregor Duncan told the story of a supremely gifted illustrator lost far too soon. Here, we present some of his work that left us wondering what lay in store for him, and for his audience.

If you've read our unprecedented oral history of SpongeBob SquarePants, you know the story of his creation and how he became a pop-culture phenomenon (and the article is excerpted here). Here, we show never-before-published drawings and photographs that you won't see anywhere else!
